The Centre was conceived as a charitable national girls high school catering for bright but economically and socially disadvantaged girls.
The establishment of the Centre was as a result of concerted efforts of individuals who envisioned an institution with a holistic education approach. Currently, the Starehe Girls community is composed of a Director, Deputy Principal, Deputy Director, a staff establishment of forty teachers and forty one non-teaching and support staff.
The steadfast growth of the Centre is attributed to the combined efforts of the Boards of Trustees and Management, donors, sponsors, partners, staff and students who work together tirelessly. When Starehe Girls Centre opened its doors to seventy two 72 girls from every county in Kenya, it had three tiny old dormitories.
Each of these dormitories accommodated twenty four 24 girls. There were two classrooms each of which accommodated 36 girls. Two other classrooms, without equipments and amenities, were converted into laboratories for teaching Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture.
