The writers of the show have said that they were worried to make Mindy and Danny a couple too early on in the show, because once you're in, you're in. They're a couple, and there is no turning back. So while it might seem frustrating that the two are only getting together now, think of it as the writers doing us a favor.
But it's a been a long summer, so you'd be forgiven for mis-remembering their romantic timeline a bit. Other than this part, obviously:. In the 14th episode of the second season, "The Desert," all of our hopes and dreams seem to come true when Danny and Mindy shared a very passionate kiss in the back of an airplane. I didn't even care that the plane felt too spacious to be real, because it was that amazing of a moment.
Everything felt right in the world, and then we were left with a winter hiatus, when suddenly things started to feel too good to be true.
The character I played in that movie, there were some really great one-liners that he had and I think I would not have known how to handle that or probably been too heavy-handed if I had not had the experience on The Mindy Project. Was it harder at all to get back into that rhythm on these last episodes after some time away? It was, yeah. I was saying that to Mindy. Does this make sense? I noticed the juggling that Mindy does. I had always seen it and recognized it, but maybe I opened my eyes more to the juggling she had to do and she did it with such grace.
And then in coming back to the show, I was overwhelmed, to be honest with you, with how well she did it and how second-nature it seemed to her. The great thing too is, the longer the show goes, it becomes this well oiled machine.
Is this scene working? How emotional was it to be on set for these last few episodes? What was the mood like on set? It was very emotional because you see so much change in people.
You spend 12, sometimes 13, 14 hours with these people a day and you learn about them, you learn their insecurities, their wants and dreams and needs and so you root for them.
I think there are friendships there that will last really forever. I love all of them so dearly and I hope to work with them again. Mindy was always cool with me and understanding that in doing the show, that I wanted to have time to do other projects whether that be movies or a play or directing — I directed a movie when I was there and getting another one together — so she was always very open.
She knew coming onto the show that was a worry or concern of mine, and she stuck to her word. It was kind of like a dance of schedules and that. The show, in my absence, kind of moved and shifted and changed so this is where it ended up. Despite those changes, particularly for the Mindy-Danny relationship, there are still very fervent fans of the relationship. Has that surprised you at all? What do you think is the reason for that? It opens up a discussion about men and women in relationships and how to be treated and how to stand up for yourself.
The more they got mad at him, I would understand and agree with a lot of it and then the more they could love the two of them together, I understand and agree. In honor of TheMindyProject series finale dropping at midnight tonight on Hulu, here is a deeeeep throwback! First ever promo shoot, way back before season one of The Mindy Project even premiered! However, the show creator noted Mindy and Danny may not last forever.
At the time, Kaling said:. I think what it ends up coming down to is there is history and chemistry. I think we as viewers and as writers want to see two people work things out or try to work things out if there is real evidence of pure and unequivocal love. We know that these two characters are going to have to really work to stay together. Then Kaling offered an update on Mindy and Danny, confirming the couple is still together.
